The 2012 Election Season with Working Families Win
On November 6, Working Families Win volunteers and staff from across the country came together to secure major victories for working family advocates at levels of elected office. Not only was President Obama elected to his second term in office, working family advocates gained strength in both chambers of Congress and in state legislatures across the country. Working Families Win played a major role in fighting back against the extreme conservative agenda.
Below are some highlights from the 2012 election season:
WFW New Hampshire placed over 5,700 calls into the race for Governor, Senate District 12 and Senate District 9. According to America Votes NH, we “Had a major impact. [Your] calls went into some of the most important legislative races in the state.” Working Families Win advocates won in the gubernatorial race, SD12, and just 210 votes separate the SD9 candidates, which sends the race to recount. WFW NH also played a role in President Obama’s win in this presidential battleground state.
Iowa
In Iowa WFW again used a state- level strategy to impact ballot races. The WFW Iowa crew canvassed over 1,800 homes using literature that compared candidate positions on issues and called almost 5,000 voters. Our GOTV efforts helped ensure the Democrats’ win in the Iowa senate by 600 votes! The targeted congressional races split, with Bruce Braley winning in CD1 and Christie Vilsack losing to Steve King in CD4. Again, WFW played a role in a presidential battleground state that President Obama won.
Nevada
WFW Nevada targeted a tight state senate race, SD15. Two incumbents were pitted against one another, with a strong progressive, Sheila Leslie, narrowly defeated by 266 votes. Working Families Win volunteers called over 2000 irregular Washoe County voters. Unfortunately we were just shy of pulling a victory in this state senate race. While that was disappointing, WFW again played a role in this presidential battleground state.

STEVE KING: A PROFESSIONAL LIAR!
Working Families Win Iowa recently kicked off its 2012 bird-dogging season at a campaign event in Mason City Iowa hosted by Congressman Steve King of Iowa’s new 4th congressional district. When Working Families Win organizer Chris Schwartz called out Rep. King on his false assertions that the President's new health care law would decrease health insurance coverage by 30 million, King became agitated and unable to handle the facts, calling in back up to have Schwartz thrown out of the event. See what all the fuss is about here.
